Evaluation Conclusion

Doing this project has helped us understand the conventions of music products and how much effort goes into making them, and how things are placed there for a reason. We placed these conventions in our own digipak, this makes it look more professional and the uses and gratification offered help please the audience, such as the entertainment offered.

The brand identity is portrayed well, we are selling him based on the image of loneliness and black and white, the adaption of the photo with photoshop made it possible so he was in colour whist the background is in black and white, this makes it unique. Following feedback from teachers and students we adapted our video to improve certain things such as adding the performance footage and reducing the length of the montage.

This project has helped me, and our group to understand further technologies that are available to help improve the appearance and usability of our blog. Such useful things that were available to us included the use of blogger, and the advanced capabilities of Final Cut Express, digital cameras and still cameras also helped as well to improve the appearance of the video and digipak. Overall i felt that our product looked professional and our digipak was attractive, and was well aimed at our target audience.

Question Four - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

New media technologies have changed the way we live, and is now very important in our society, as shown in the numerous political revolutions in the arab spring in 2011, where social networking was a key tool for success, but also to inspire others. The way technology has changed the music industry is clear, it has had a major impact in the way we buy, but also listen to music. Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook has reformed the way many talk to each other, and the music industry has noticed this, therefore social networking can be used for numerous views and opinions on new music videos, but for also creating 'groups', where fans can follow them for extra content. We were able to make use of these sites as it let us share the final video with our freinds for others to view, and comment, gaining people's opinions which is important. Maslow's hierarchy of needs demonstates that humans basic needs include freindship and a close relationship, these sites to an extent help fulfil these and lets people communicate with each other.

This allows for a spread in the popularity of music, and if someone comments on Facebook for instance, it will be seen by their friends who look at the music companies page, and may like to see the content they offer. The internet overall has transformed the way we go about our lifes, now we can purchase numerous products such as music online, and gain instant access to music videos via YouTube or other search engines such as google which aids this process. Watching videos online helps videos goes viral, and can rack up millions of views around the world, but it is also a useful to in researching and gaining ideas of music, and videos which go with them, as you can view songs and pick parts which you like and use them in your own video, this is a quick and efficient way for doing so.

The widespread variety of technology means that you can access music videos and numerous forms, not to mention the smart phones many people have, where you can portably watch videos online, and access youtube. This is again used by many people who have Ipods and tablet devices such as Ipads who enjoy streaming videos to their devices, because of these, digital music downloads are steadily increasing, changing firstly the format from vinyl's, to cd's, and now a single digital file. We have utilised these forms of technologies during the production stage, playing music on mobiles to understand the song better, watching videos online to gain ideas, and blogging to plan and organise effectively.

Our music video will be viewed through various forms of technology, for instance Blogger, where it may be discovered, but mainly through the use of Youtube, where we have already uploaded the video, and hopefully we will gain feedback. A digital file of the video will also be avalible to download from Itunes, allowing viewers many ways to be able to view it,such as from the computer, their phone or music device.

Question Three Evaluation- What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience research is an important necessity for music videos, as the video needs to successfully appeal to its target audience, and attract a wide range of viewers, using various techniques. Using Audience research methods such as focus groups, online surveys is another demonstration how technology has changed the way the music industry operates, by understanding what the public wants they are able to fulfil our needs, and use the Uses and Gratifications theory to support this, offering such things such as identification. With feedback, the company can see what the audience likes, and dislikes, and can alter the video to satisfy them, creating the best video they can.

If we had to change our media texts based on the feedback we received there are various things that we would do, firstly the music video. If we had to improve on the video,we would have definitely included a wider range of shots,as a lot of shots are medium shots and generally face on, so a possibility would to be to use a close up, but at a lower angle and side shots to engage the audience. Another improvement would be the band footage, we could have improved the lighting, and surroundings, and make it seem more professional. The digipak could slightly be improved with specifically the front cover, as it does not match,or go well with the other panels, the font used also could be changed to match the genre we used.

Summary
. Liked the fast pace and the narrative
. Good locations, and the Aerial shot used was good
. The brick wall made the video different, but was effective
. Improvements suggested include a wider varety of shots and angles
. Band footage could be improved and flashback was overused
. The Digipak had a good colour scheme and background images
. Digipak could have had a better front cover that matched the rest
. Overall it was good, but little improvements like the band footage would make it better

Evaluation Question Two- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation Question 2

Clothing helps the audience in identifying the genre of the video, and throughout the actor is wearing a popular brand of clothing amongst younger people, therfore this attracts the target audience, and the right social demographic. We placed this brand, 'Superdry"as we thought it was recognisable for the audience, and therefore fulfills the Uses and Gratification theory of identification. The clothing makes the genre seem as though it is indie, this is because it is a popular brand amongst indie bands. The final media products work well with each other with a common colour scheme, and theme, he is portrayed as lonely and depressed in all the texts.

Evaluation Question One - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question 1 Media Evaluation Charlie Gilbert

We updated the digipak advert based on feedback from the focus group, we have changed it to reflect the digipak better, and make the house style clearer, with the use of black and white, as well as keeping Jack in colour. The black and white background juxtaposes Jack as he is in colour, this signifies that he feels isolated from the rest of the world, as it carries the theme of depression across effectively.

As the song begins to pick up pace we have a quick jump cut to demonstate this effect, showing Jack walking along the street alone, this works well and engages the audience, but also creates questions for them. Emotion is also succesfully portrayed in the video with the use of various shots, such as the aerial shot of Jack on the grass, using this is again using the uses and gratifications theory, as some people may identify with the depressing state he is in.
